By: E.E. Cummings

Summary:
The poet talks about four girls named maggie, milly, molly, and may who go away to the beach. The girls each find an item that seems random but actually has meaning. Maggie found a shell that sang, milly befriended a star, molly got chased by a horrible thing, and may found a smooth, round stone. In the end the poet says “for whatever we lose (like you or me) it is always ourselves we find in the sea.” This means that everyone loses themselves sometimes but in unexpected locations we can discover our true selves again.

Importance of the Title:
The title has the names of the girls that went to the beach and found themselves in it. The title could also mean that everyveryone has the ability of finding themselves if they look difficult enough because it contains just random names. I think there’s an importance in why the poet didn’t capitalize the names in the poem. I think the poet did this because this poem doesn’t just relate to just those four girls, but to everyone. The names do not resemble names one bit; the title means everyone because the names did not acquire capitalization.

Similes
A simile is a comparison of two things using like or as. A simile in this poem is “as small as a world.”

Personification
A personification is giving human-like qualities to an inanimate object. A personification in this poem is “a shell that sang so sweetly.”

Rhyme Scheme
This poem doesn’t really have a rhyme scheme even though a few lines rhyme. That means the poem is free verse.

Speaker
The speaker of the poem is most likely the poet. It doesn’t really say but you can assume that the poet is the one speaking what he wrote.

Imagery

Sense:

Images Described:

Sight

Languid

Sound

Sweetly

Smell

none

Taste

none

Touch

Smooth, round

Alliteration
An alliteration is consonant sounds repeated at the beginning of a word. An alliteration in this poem is “maggie and milly and molly and may.”

Assonance
An assonance is repeated vowel sounds. In this poem “stranded star” is an assonance because the A’s in stranded star both sound the same and are in words next to each other.

Symbolism
Symbolism is an object that has meaning and represents something else. Each item the girls pick up means something to them. The whole beach is also a symbol. I think the beach represents the girl’s life and the little things they find are important to their life.

Poem’s Message about Life:
The message of life in this poem tells us that we can find ourselves in locations we would not expect. The girls in this poem go down to the beach to have a pleasant time and unsuspectingly find themselves. The names are very valuable in this poem because the poet does not capitalize them. It seems subtle but actually it means a lot. This tells us that the names actually are not names. Sometimes people say a lot of random names to mean everyone and that is what the poet did. The poet had the smarts to not capitalize the names too because the poet wants to show that everyone can find themselves in unsuspecting places.

How does the poet make his message about life clear?
He says in the end “For whatever we lose (like a you or a me) it’s always ourselves we find in the sea.” This makes the message obvious because the poet basically sums up the poem in this last sentence. The last sentence means whenever we lose ourselves we can find ourselves again in an unsuspecting place. The poet also makes it obvious in the poem that he means everyone by not capitalizing maggie, milly, molly, and may so you know he did not talk about exact people. By not talking about detailed people he directs the poem toward everyone.

Personal Reaction
My reaction to this poem is that I should be myself no matter what anyone thinks. If I lose my way I can just hope for the best and eventually I will find my path again. This poem changed my thinking about a lot of things and meant a lot to me. It really shows a lot about how things end different and work out differently for everyone. I may look at a painting and see a boat, but somebody else may see a plane. Each of the girls walks down to the beach, but they all have a completely different view and it says a lot about the different things people deal with and how we shouldn’t judge people. I may go through a situation I think seems simple that feels very difficult for another person. And it also shows how everyone thinks completely different, our mind sets and our views.

Photo

artgeek143:
